On the same day the cemetery was chartered, the commissions secretary was instructed to invite Joseph Earnshaw to come to Terre Haute at his earliest convenience for the purpose of examining the grounds selected by the city for the cemetery. 108After inspecting the property, Earnshaw proposed to survey and lay out the ground plat, including 800 lots and 300 graves, agreeing to furnish all drawings and maps for the sum of three thousand dollars. Following the Victorian-Romantic landscape 109tradition, the plan was to emphasize the natural terrain while grouping individual species of trees and plants together, a tradition Earnshaw was exposed to as a young man working with Strauch at Spring Grove Cemetery. 110Highland Lawn Cemeterys original landscape design remained intact for over 120 years, with the exception of an 1893 plan modification that necessitated changing the location of a chapel due to the construction of two roads. 111The cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and is recognized as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. 112 F A I R V I E W L AW N C E M E T E R YOne of the most notable cemeteries designed by the Earnshaw and Punshon Civil Engineering Company was the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The firm was brought to the cemeterys proposed location to view the property and obtain necessary details, including testing and recording the depth of the soil, which would be valuable in creating maps and plans of the cemetery. 113Earnshaw and Punshon also prepared grading, drainage, lot, working, and burial plans. 114Many of the elements incorporated in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery Plan were familiar: lakes, walkways and avenues, and low grave markings. 11540
