Surveys undertaken by Joseph Earnshaw were not just limited to Cincinnati and its early suburbs. Nearby Covington, Kentucky, like Cincinnati during the second half of the 19th century, also experienced rapid growth in population, which led to the citys urban development. To protect sites designated for burial of its deceased, Linden Grove Cemetery, located between 13th and 15th Streets in Covingtons developing westside community, commissioned Earnshaw to reestablish the cemeterys property lines and protect it from encroaching development. Also during this time period, surveys performed by Joseph Earnshaw extended outside to communities on the southern banks of the Ohio River. Many of the townships surrounding Cincinnatisuch as Anderson, Symmes, Whitewater, Mill Creek, and othersneeded to be resurveyed due to the inaccuracies of the original surveys of the Symmes Purchase. An abundance of property disputes created plenty of work for Joseph Earnshaw. As a partnership, the Earnshaw and Punshon Engineering Company lasted eleven years, until Joseph Earnshaws death in 1906. Together, they had resurveyed properties that were being improved, added to, or sold, reestablishing property lines established 25 years prior. Much of this work was for the city of Cincinnati, as it upgraded roads, water utilities, and sewer systems. After Earnshaws death, Punshon maintained the firm under the name Thomas B. Punshon Engineering Company and continued the work he and his former partner performed. 5 L A N D S C A P E A R C H I T E C T U R E B L O O M S The practice of landscape architecture is as diverse and complex as the landscape itself. 73The history of landscape architecture and engineering, like the founding of civil engineering and surveying, predates the profession. Peoples urge to control the natural environment through human-made alterations can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where the practice was believed to be one of the highest achievements of civilized society. 74The design and planning of space can be seen in every civilization throughout history, from the ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans. Landscape architecture can be categorized as the design of public and private spaces alike, while also including restoration of natural habitat. 75In some cases, the integration of the two occurs in a planned manner in an attempt to create environments of quality and delight. 7629
