Though the cemetery was designed in the park-like setting commonly associated with the firm, what makes Fairview Lawn Cemetery significant is that it contains 121 burial plots, all with tombstones lined up in military precision and dated April 15, 1912. 116The date represents the chilly morning when the unsinkable Titanic sank after colliding with an iceberg in the North Sea, killing more than 1,500 passengers and crew. 117Halifaxs participation in the Titanic disaster was due to it being the closet port with reliable rail connections to America. The White Star Line, the ships owner, chose it as the staging location for recovery operations. 118P R O P E R T I E S , P A R K S , A N D M O R EAll around the country, the Earnshaw and Punshon Engineering Company significantly impacted the nations landscape, designing properties, parks, and subdivisions. Many of these projects feature the same elements present in rural cemetery designs but applied to non-cemetery sites. The first of these projects was the Southern Indiana Hospital for the Insane, also known as the Woodmere Hospital for the Insane, located in Evansville, Indiana. With grounds planned and sketched in 1890, the hospital was one of four to open in Indiana between the late 1880s and 1910. 119Another project took the Earnshaw and Punshon Civil Engineering Company to California: The firm worked with the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company and the American Cattle Trust in 1890 on a planned community for the Western Meat Company. 120With the establishment of the Gustavus Swift meat packing plant in the area, and the organization of a beef trust with American Cattle Trust of Chicago, South San Francisco became a community of stockyards and packing plants, leading to the development of an industrial town in one of the leading industrial regions of the West Coast. 121Above: Master site plan for Crapo Park, Burlington, Iowa, 189541
