Design Challenge: When the Muhlhauser family sold their West Chester farm, they generously donated their 125-year-old barn to the West Chester Parks Department. Finding the best use of the barn proved challenging. Due to our familiarity with West Chester Township and extensive experience with historical facilities, MSP was the best choice for the project.

Design Solution: After thorough research and analysis, MSP determined that relocating the reconstructed barn to the 150-acre Beckett Park was optimal. Situated in the heart of the West Chester Union Centre business district, the park already featured amenities such as walking trails, fishing ponds, playgrounds, picnic shelters, an ice rink, and a baseball complex. The Muhlhauser Barn now serves as a community event facility for weddings, reunions, and celebrations. MSP designed the facility while considering cost-effectiveness, preserving historic integrity, and complying with current codes.

Design Outcome: The Muhlhauser Barn has become a beloved community center hosting events year-round. These include the West Chester Winter Farmers’ Market, 5k races, weddings, and regional events like the “Beer Baron Weekend” beer festival. The building and site integrate sustainable design and LEED principles, such as structural reuse and stormwater management through rain gardens.
