Design Challenge: The West Chester Parks Department hired MSP to conduct a feasibility study to determine the best use of a 125 year old barn donated by the Mullhauser family when they sold their farm. Upon completion, MSP developed construction documents for the project.
Design Outcome: MSP determined that the barn should become part of Beckett Park for use as a community facility and indoor/outdoor learning center, enhancing other socializing opportunities at the park including walking trails, playground, fishing ponds, picnic shelter and baseball complex. MSP designed the facility considering issues of cost-effectiveness, preservation of the historic integrity of the structure, and compliance with current codes. Muhlhauser Barn is a popular community center that hosts year round events ranging from the West Chester Winter Farmer’s Market, 5k races, weddings, and other regional events such as the “Beer Baron Weekend” beer festival. Although not LEED-certified, the Muhlhauser Barn building and site incorporate sustainable design and LEED principles such as structure reuse and stormwater management through use of rain gardens.
