USS Cincinnati Cold War Memorial and Peace Pavilion

Submarine Association Cincinnati

Design Challenge: The USS Cincinnati, a nuclear-powered submarine, played a crucial role in national security during the Cold War. Decommissioned in 1996, its legacy lives on through a memorial at the Voice of America Park in West Chester. Our challenge was to create a memorial that harmoniously combines history, learning, play, and relaxation.

Design Solution: MSP designed a representation of the submarine, incorporating original elements such as the conning tower, upper rudder, and the “Big Red Machine” emergency diesel engine generator. The structure features solar panels on the submarine’s body, which spans the size of a football field. These panels power educational kiosks and other electrical needs, while also providing shade for the park-like setting. The memorial includes a wharf with informational plaques and an area suitable for guest speakers.

Design Outcome: Upon completion, the memorial will stand as a national landmark honoring the USS Cincinnati’s service during the Cold War and recognizing Cincinnati’s contributions. This regional attraction will serve as a gathering place for national holidays and complement the VOA Museum. It will also educate visitors of all ages on STEM-T (science, technology, engineering, math, and trades) topics related to nuclear submarine operations.
