Timothy Freeman Center for Developmental Disabilities

UC Health

Design Challenge: The Timothy Freeman, MD, Center for Developmental Disabilities supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who need reliable and coordinated healthcare. UC Health recognized that many adults with IDD face obstacles when they seek care in traditional medical settings. These spaces often lack sensory-friendly design, clear circulation, and the specialized equipment required to meet the needs of this population. As a result, patients experience stress, discomfort, and fragmented care. The goal of this project was to create a dedicated medical office that supported integrated primary care and behavioral health services in an accessible and comforting environment.

Design Solution: The project team designed a 15,000 SF medical office that responds directly to the needs of adults with IDD. The plan includes calm circulation paths and predictable layout cues that reduce stress for patients who benefit from clear visual organization. Sensory-friendly fixtures and finishes help create a stable, supportive atmosphere. Universally accessible exam rooms, consultation spaces, and restrooms allow each patient to move comfortably throughout the center. The design also includes specialized medical equipment that supports a wide range of clinical needs. An integrated care model places primary care and behavioral health services together. As a result, patients experience fewer visits, better continuity, and a smoother care process.

Design Outcome: The completed Freeman Center gives UC Health a dedicated environment that supports adults with IDD and their long-term healthcare needs. The renovated space offers a calm and accessible setting that improves comfort and encourages consistent engagement with care. Providers benefit from a layout that improves communication and coordination, which reduces delays and strengthens patient relationships. Since opening, the Freeman Center has delivered a predictable, inclusive, and patient-centered experience. This approach supports UC Health’s mission to improve access, quality, and dignity in care for adults with developmental disabilities.
