Design Challenge: An new upscale residential community wanted to create placemaking opportunities by building a neighborhood amenities package that included a playground, pool house, and pool. The poolhouse was located in the exact spot as an existing 1930s barn.
Design Outcome: Rather than tear down the well-preserved, historic barn, MSP incorporated the existing structure in the master plan. Renovations included the addition of restrooms, an equipment room, and a large, open air, event center. Sliding barn doors create an open airy feeling in warm weather and can be closed for rain or cooler weather. Wood flooring planks were re-used for cladding and the standing seem metal roof and exterior wood detailing remains intact allowing it retain the look and feel of the 80+ year old structure. By thoughtfully re-purposing the existing structure, surrounding trees and wooded setting were minimally disturbed. Elliott Farm Barn is a thriving three-season community center surrounded by other placemaking amenities where residents can connect with each other and the space they share such as: community garden, walking trails, playground, pool and firepit.
