Cincinnati Scholar House

HER Cincinnati

Design Challenge: Housing is a key component of HER Cincinnati’s mission of breaking the cycle of poverty for women. The Family Scholar House model provides affordable housing for single parents as well as a child development center with preschool education. Developing the first Cincinnati Scholar House in Walnut Hills, a transitional neighborhood close to public transit and educational opportunities was an ambitious undertaking by HER Cincinnati and Christ Church Cathedral.

Design Solution: Working within a one-acre site, MSP designed a four-story, 44 residential unit building with street-level child development center and retail space. Cincinnati Scholar House meets the city’s form-based code and complements the historic aesthetic of the neighborhood. The complex site design includes a pedestrian plaza, community garden, playground, and outdoor gathering area.

Design Outcome: Cincinnati Scholar House is a thriving subsidized residential community for single parents and their children. The project was one of the first to be built as part of Walnut Hills revitalization and has served as a catalyst for continued redevelopment and investment.
