APA OHIO PRESENTS 2019 OHIO PLANNING AWARDS
Eight community planning projects, organizations, and individuals were recognized for their outstanding efforts across Ohio. Additionally, these awards highlight the significant contributions made to the field of planning.
APA Ohio Planning Awards Chair Matthew Schmidt, AICP, noted that the 2019 awards showcase the incredible impact planners have in communities throughout the state. He highlighted how these awards reflect the significant contributions of planners to their local areas. Then, he emphasized that the projects highlight the creation of public spaces, long-term visioning, and efforts to address social needs. Schmidt added that these projects only touch on the vast breadth of how the planning profession is transforming Ohio. He concluded by stating that this positive change is a testament to the theme of the awards. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of the theme: “Because We Plan.”
We received twenty-seven nominations. A jury of professional planners from the APA Texas Chapter reviewed the nominations and selected the winners. Evaluation criteria include innovation, creativity, transferability and public participation.

About APA Ohio:
APA Ohio is a statewide, non-profit association of citizens and professional planners committed to enhancing community planning. Consequently, their goal is to improve the quality of life for all Ohioans. APA Ohio is a state chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) and operates under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Trustees elected from the general membership. Chapter sections include Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Miami Valley and Northwest Ohio. Visit www.ohioplanning.org for additional information.
Founded in October 1919, APA Ohio evolved from a group of future-oriented civic-minded Clevelanders who organized the first Ohio State Conference on City Planning. Therefore, The Ohio Planning Conference, which later merged with the American Planning Association, was the first organization of its kind. Moreover, it remains the oldest association of citizen and professional planners in the country. Over the past one hundred years, the association and its members have changed and evolved. Nevertheless, our mission remains the same: to promote good planning for the betterment of all Ohioans.
